When it comes to daily activities, exercising,  playing sports, and participating in physical hobbies, injuries can occur. Treating injuries the right way is essential in order to have a successful recovery.

Hundreds of athletes experience acute injuries everyday.  An acute sports injury occurs when there is a specific mechanism of injury (hit by ball, collision with opponent, etc.) and symptoms such as bleeding, swelling, and pain occur immediately.

The majority of acute sports injuries can safely be treated by P.R.I.C.E, which is a method designed to treat sport injuries. P.R.I.C.E stands for Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. The principles of the P.R.I.C.E method should be used the first 48-72 hours immediately after the injury occurs. During this time frame, the goal is to control swelling around the injured area, prevent further injury, and reducing pain. Following these principles correctly will help reduce the amount of time you need for physical therapy.

The purpose of protection is to avoid any further injury to the area. Depending on the injury a splint, sling, protective tape, or an ace bandage are all ways to help protect the injured area. The second principle rest, will allow the body to take part in its own healing process to naturally occur. Ice, the third principle of the P.R.I.C.E method is highly recommended right after the injury occurs. Preferably, ice packs should be used because most ice packs use crushed ice which makes treatment more comfortable. Ice/ice packs should be placed in a Ziploc bag, or wrapped in a towel. After the ice is removed, a compression wrap should be applied to the injured area to reduce swelling. Finally the last component of the P.R.I.C.E. method, elevation. Elevation is important to help reduce blood flow to the injured area.

Physical therapy is usually needed when sports injuries occur. However, the P.R.I.C.E method can be done right away prior to seeking help. If you live near Smithtown and would like to receive more information about the P.R.I.C.E method or your injury, give us a call today!
