A vaguely defined yet startlingly widespread disease with almost no uniform cause, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can affect almost anyone. What is surreal about chronic fatigue syndrome is that it’s not only underplayed, it is also startlingly relatable.  If you are feeling habitually tired despite taking the time to get well-rested, you may have this syndrome.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is typically defined as having prolonged fatigue despite adequate rest. For example, let’s say you have slept eight hours every night this week and still feel like you have been in a waking slumber the whole time, it is safe to assume that you at least know someone who has gone through this if you haven’t yourself. Well some people have more severe cases of CFS, in fact the clinical requirement to be diagnosed with this disease is an astonishing six months of experiencing memory problems, joint pains, headaches, or issues sleeping.

We have a disease of no known origin that have symptoms relatable enough that anyone can project themselves onto the condition, the surefire way to circumvent the issue of erroneous self-diagnosis is to follow the clinician’s guidelines for diagnosing CFS. There is no medicinal cure for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, but physical therapy has been shown to assist with the disease.

In Smithtown and Oceanside, the Physical Therapy Experience specializes in manual therapy, which is a recommended means to treat CTF. The Physical Therapy Experience offers services to relieve you of any joint pain, stiffness, or fatigue. Unfortunately because there is no cure for Chronic Fatigue syndrome, manual therapy and joint mobilizations are your best proactive defense towards improving daily life.

Chronic fatigue syndrome has also been called myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and, more recently, systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID). Although CFS/ME and SEID share the same major symptom of chronic fatigue, there is variation between the definitions of these disorders. The symptom of chronic fatigue also may arise from more than one underlying condition.

The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown, although there are many theories — ranging from viral infections to psychological stress. Some experts believe chronic fatigue syndrome might be triggered by a combination of factors.
