Joint Mobilization for Frozen Shoulder

As we grow older, it is only natural for our bodies to experience some forms of degeneration. Chronic shoulder pain is especially common in people between the ages of 40 and 60. More specifically, Frozen Shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that affects 2% of the general population and is more likely to appear within this age group. Frozen Shoulder is the thickening or the tightening of the shoulder capsule, a strong tissue that lines the head of the arm within the shoulder socket. Between the head of the arm and shoulder capsule is synovial fluid, a natural lubrication in the joint that creates smooth motion. When Frozen Shoulder sets in, stiff bands of tissues- or adhesions- begin to form and the vital synovial fluid fades. This combination limits the arm’s mobility and creates an uncomfortable feeling in the shoulder area.

Generally, people who experience this condition go through three stages:

  • Freezing
In this stage, the pain gradually worsens. As this occurs, your shoulder loses its range of motion. This stage typically lasts from 6 weeks to 9 months.
  • Frozen
While the pain may be somewhat subdued, the stiffness in the shoulder lingers. This uncomfortable stage lasts anywhere from 4 to 6 months and can greatly hamper your daily activities.
  • Thawing
Aptly named, this stage brings motion back into the shoulder joint. While you can’t always expect a full recovery, alleviation could come in 6 month up to 2 years.

While the definite causes of Frozen Shoulder are not fully known, doctors have narrowed down three major pre-existing conditions that can ultimately leave a person at a much higher risk of developing it. Diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Parkinson’s can all lead to Frozen Shoulder forming. In simpler cases, anyone who had limited mobility in the shoulder area previously-from fractures or surgical procedures- may be more susceptible as well.

The good news is that Frozen Shoulder treatment can be administered without surgery 90% of the time through physical therapy. Shoulder conditions are just one of the focuses at Physical Therapy Experience.
