Bell’s Palsy, or facial paralysis, occurs when muscles on one side of your face becomes weak or paralyzed. There are various medical issues that can result in this condition. When the cause can not be identified, it is referred to as Bell’s Palsy. Some of these symptoms are the inability to taste, feeling sensitive to sound and facial weakness that causes your face to droop. This is one of the clear indicators of having Bell’s Palsy.

While this condition sounds serious, the majority of those who suffer from this can fully recover in one to two months. As the muscles in your face begin to strengthen, it may be the right time to start physical therapy. Due to the inability to use certain muscles during your recovery, you may experience facial drooping. Physical therapy can prevent this from occurring as well as the contracting of facial muscles. Common techniques for alleviating these symptoms are massages and facial exercises.

Prior to beginning physical therapy, the patient will be seen by a professional to determine the best course of treatment. The ultimate goal is to regain function in the affected facial muscles, decrease the pain, and create a beneficial environment where the patient can heal. In order to achieve these results, the physical therapist may use techniques such as muscle re-education, muscle energy techniques, massaging and myofascial release.

When treating Bell’s Palsy, physical therapy can be beneficial in helping your facial muscles strengthen at a quicker rate. If you live in the Oceanside or Smithtown area, you will be treated by professionals who specialize in hands-on therapy and and are willing to use any effective type of treatment to help you get back to your daily routine. For any questions on how The Physical Therapy Experience can help you in regaining your health, you can contact either of their offices by phone or email.

What is facial paralysis? Facial paralysis is a loss of facial movement due to nerve damage. Your facial muscles may appear to droop or become weak. It can happen on one or both sides of the face. Common causes of facial paralysis include: infection or inflammation of the facial nerve head trauma head or neck tumor stroke Facial paralysis can come on suddenly (in the case of Bell’s palsy, for example) or happen gradually over a period of months (in the case of a head or neck tumor). Depending on the cause, the paralysis might last for a short or extended period of time.
