Physical Therapy's Impact on Lung Function

Physical therapy is often thought of solely as the rehabilitation of a person’s bones, muscles, and joints after an injury. Advances in the medical field have brought therapeutic practices to the lungs as well. These new treatment options can help individuals with lung troubles, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD for short.

COPD is a serious lung disease that obstructs the airways making it difficult for a person to breathe. It often occurs in current or former smokers but can be contracted through other means. Breathing in dusts, chemicals, and fumes can trigger the disease which makes individuals that have done work in construction more susceptible. It can also be hereditary and many people are born with the condition. Symptoms include shortness of breath during casual activities, frequent coughing, and wheezing. With over twelve million people suffering from COPD and an estimated twelve million more with some type of a lung function impairment, the new treatments couldn’t have come sooner.

These new pulmonary rehabilitation programs are aimed at helping patients achieve their highest level of function and activity. The exercises that are taught to patients are performed when there is any occurrence of shortness of breath. These breathing training methods can potentially save a person a hospital visit if done correctly. Methods include diaphragmatic breathing and pursed-lip breathing. Mixed with these breathing exercises is actual, physical exercise. Short, low intensity exercise is the best way to combat COPD because it allows for the lungs to be worked without maxing out their ability. Water aerobics as well as walking can help in regaining strength and endurance.

COPD can be a crippling condition and leave individuals feeling as if they can’t complete the simplest of activities. With these new techniques, millions of people can be on the road to recovery and resume normal activities as they once did.

Summer health risks for seniors

Many people consider summer to be the best time of year. The weather is beautiful, families can spend more time together, and people generally seem happier during the summer as opposed to other seasons. Unfortunately, summer does have some downfalls. One of the negative aspects of summer that often goes overlooked, is the increased health risks for seniors.

These health risks range widely in terms of effects and seriousness. Some of the most common health issues that seniors suffer from during the summer include:

  • heat stroke
  • heat exhaustion
  • dehydration
  • food poisoning
  • over exposure to the sun
  • diseases caused by parasites and bacteria
Many of these health issues can be avoided with a few simple remedies. To avoid heat stroke, heat exhaustion and over exposure to the sun, you should avoid rigorous activity if you are not typically active. If you are active, take multiple breaks whenever possible. Also, try to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day. These risks can also be lessened dramatically by drinking water throughout the day. This will also reduce your risk of dehydration. To avoid increased risks of food poisoning, do not eat food that has been sitting outdoors for long periods of time. Also, be sure to wrap food securely and refrigerate it as quickly as possible to keep it from spoiling. Public pools are a great way to spend time with the grandkids, but they also become breeding grounds for bacteria and parasites during the summer months. To avoid diseases that can be contracted from these bacteria, be sure to shower before and after spending time in pools.

These tips can help you avoid getting sick during the summer, but physical therapy can also be useful in preventing some of the health risks mentioned above. Physical therapists can teach you different breathing exercises that will help you breathe better in the higher temperatures. Muscle strength and control can also be improved through physical therapy which will allow you to keep up an active lifestyle with fellow seniors and grandchildren during the summer.
